What are the symptoms of the NDM-1 Superbug?

I just saw on the world news that the superbug found in South Asia and Britain is expected to spread worldwide. What are the symptoms of this bug? Is it worst than the Swine Flu? Will this new superbug limit your travel and/or contact with people?

NDM-1 (New Delhi Metallo-beta-lactamase-1) is originated from bacteria (Escheria coli or E. coli; Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter and Citrobacter, the coliform gram-negative enteric bacilli). It is transmitted from person to person by direct contact. It is originated from India, so the name is NDM-1. The enzyme NDM-1 is found inside the coliform bacteria and makes the bacteria extremely virulent and resistant to most antibiotics.

Basically, the symptoms will be related to the E. coli, the Klebsiella pneumonia, Enterobacter and Citobacter, the gram-negative enteric bacilli.

1. E. coli symptoms: Diarrhea (usually associated with pain and cramping in the abdomen), nausea and vomiting, urinary tract infection, skin infections.
2. Kebsiella pneumonia symptoms: Fever (can be accompanied by dizziness and chills), cough (is also usually present with sputum), haempotysis, upper respiratory tract infections, foul odor released from the nose, congestion, wheezing, generalized skin infections.
3. Enterobac symptoms: Some symptoms of Enterobacter infections include bacteremia, lower respiratory tract infections, skin infections, soft tissue infections, RTI, UTI, fever, cough, production of purulent sputum, tachypnea, etc
4. Citrobacter symptoms: Acute gastroenteritis is characterized by two or more of the symptoms of vomiting, urinary tract infections include a burning sensation when urinating, SSTI, RTI, etc.

In some conditions, it is worst than h1n1.

From what I've read so far (references below), there aren't technically any symptoms for NDM-1. After all, it's an enzyme that lives in bacteria. If you get sick due to E. coli or another bacteria, the symptoms you have will be in line with whatever it was that made you sick. The real problem is that NDM-1 prevents doctors from treating that bacteria with antibiotics.

I'm not sure how they could tell if NDM-1 is present. I assume they have a test for it, though I don't know if they'd do the test right away or only after administering antibiotics proved unsuccessful.

As I understand it, NDM-1 doesn't raise your likelihood of getting sick; it just makes it much more difficult to get better.

It looks like they are saying one of the NDM-1 factors is E. Coli. The news is developing fast but it seems many who have been treated for NDM-1 superbug are related to the symptoms of E. Coli. These can range from urinary tract infections to bloody diarrhea. The diarrhea can be mild to begin with or severe. Blood infections may also be a symptom.

I think it is important for anyone who has travelled to the areas of concern (India, Pakistan etc) and especially those who have had medical procedures while there be especially alert to these symptoms. Additionally now that they are saying it has spread person to person even if you have not been to these countries but have been in contact with someone who has, it is wise to be on high alert for these symptoms and see a doctor at the earliest stage of recognition of them.

When I was reading about this new Superbug and looking for NDM-1 symptoms, I noticed this USA video about an E. Coli outbreak in Washington state just this month. I think it is important for parent to review this one too since E. Coli can be so deadly to children.

As told, the NDM-1 (New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamose) symptoms would be that of E. coli and Kebsiella pneumonia. If this two combines, that makes NDM-1 resistant to even the most powerful antibiotics.

Here are the symptoms for the E. coli:

• Diarrhea which can come as mild to severe in nature. This can be watery or bloody.
• Pain and cramping in the abdomen.
• Nausea.
• Vomiting.
Urinary tract infection (UTI)
• Low-grade fever (typically not over 101)

Kebsiella pneumonia symptoms:

• Fever (103 degrees Fahrenheit or greater).
• Dizziness
• Chills
• Cough
• Wheezing
• Urinary tract and wound infections

However, we still can prevent this fast progressing disease from spreading by being vigilant in our hygiene measures and by having an effective hand washing or proper sanitation. And as a rule of thumb, we need to strengthen our immune system by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, maintaining a healthy diet and taking vitamins so we can have a strong shield against infections. I think this is all we can do for now to prevent us from acquiring this deadly disease as it has been told to be antibiotics-resistant.

Good day, i want you to read the only scientific article about this kind of bacterias. They are vulnerable to 3 kinds of antibiotics, thats the worrying thing about these bacterias. Anyway, they are pretty much treatable. The way they find out if you are infected by NDM-1 positive bacterias is to do an antibiogram that takes around 1 to 3 days to be ready, you can google for it
