What is the NDM-1 Superbug?

While shopping for groceries, I overheard a woman talking about the NDM-1 Superbug. She said it is a new flu and a serious health threat, just as the Swine flu. I want to know what it is exactly and how to protect my family. Can anyone help me out here?

NDM -1 is an enzyme called “New Delhi Metallo-beta-lactamase-1”. It is originated from India, so the name is NDM-1. The enzyme NDM-1 is found inside bacteria (not virus). It was initially found in Escherichia coli or E. coli a gram-negative bacteria. Later involvement of Klebsiella pneumoniae another gram-negative bacteria was proved. Bacteriologists are now sure of the involvement of other members of this group, Enterobacter and Citrobacter, the coliform gram-negative enteric bacilli (medical importance of the later two is few). These bacteria extremely virulent and become resistant to most antibiotics. Scientists have warned that a new enzyme called New Delhi-Metallo-1 could make all bacteria resistant to almost all antibiotic, so, it is a great superbug.

The new superbug gene is being increasingly found in UK, Australia, Canada, U.S.A, Netherlands and Sweden and elsewhere. The superbug gene, which can be swapped between different bacteria to make them resistant to most drugs, has so far been identified in 37 people who returned to the U.K. after undergoing cosmetic surgery like cosmetic surgery in India or Pakistan. The scientists say that many Americans and Europeans travel to India and Pakistan for cheap elective procedures and it was likely the superbug gene would spread worldwide.

NDM-1 infects a bacteria, like E. Coli, and genetically alters that bacteria making it drug/antibiotic resistant and therefore very dangerous as any drug resistant bacteria can and will harm and kill those infected. Any bacteria is susceptible to being genetically altered by NDM-1 and that genetic alteration makes that specific bacteria antibiotic resistant.

"Also worrying was that the gene was found on plasmids — bits of mobile DNA that can jump easily from one bacteria strain to another." (1)

"Mobile DNA"... scary right?

The scariest part about this new NDM-1 is that it does not limit itself to a single form or type of bacteria, NDM-1 can literally effect the genetics of any bacteria and make that bacteria hyper resistant to antibiotic (carbapenem-resistant) drug treatments.

"And experts fear NDM-1 could now jump to other strains of bacteria that are already resistant to many other antibiotics.

Ultimately, this could produce dangerous infections that would spread rapidly from person to person and be almost impossible to treat." (2)

"The potential of NDM-1 to be a worldwide public health problem is great, and co-ordinated international surveillance is needed." (3)

As of right now the best way to protect yourself would to avoid going to India, Pakistan, or the United Kingdom as these are the NDM-1 hot spots as of right now.. today. Tomorrow is a different story and this has the potential to effect a very wide segment of the population of Earth... and quickly.

This will not be just one "superbug" it has the potential to be a significant number of different carbapenem-resistant bacterial infections that have the potential to spread and effect the world wide population with stealth via invisibly because NDM-1 can and will effect different bacteria as it goes.. right now E.Coli seems to be the preferred bacteria to be infected by the NDM-1 but that will change and the number of drug resistant bacteria will grow in the coming weeks.

NDM-1 genetically alters bacteria and makes that bacteria carbapenem reststant. Carbapenems are the strongest of antibiotics and often the last resort treatments.

"There are currently no new antibiotics in the pipeline to combat bacteria resistant to carbapenems, and worldwide spread of the resistance gene is considered a nightmare scenario" (4)

I have read alot the past week about the NDM-1 Superbug, because it definitely has me scared.

A superbug is a virus or bacterium that has a resistance to antibiotics. In easy to understand terms, since the NDM-1 Superbug is resistant to antibiotics, it is able to run it's course and therefore is left untreated. The virus can then run rapid through the population and that is why is so very dangerous.

The word Superbug is said to come from the media and not doctors. Journalist Dave Mosher at LiveScience.com stated "the word is often used for dangerous viruses as well as bacteria."

The NDM-1 Superbug symptoms can be diarrhea, fever, possible vomiting (the common flu symptoms.)

The key is to try to keep our immune systems strong by only using antibiotics when necessary, eat fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of fluids, stay clean and wash hands often anything you can do to strengthen your immune system may help.

In the news, it states that some people that have been traveling back from India after having medical procedures done have brought a new superbug called the NDM-1 Superbug. They state that it could spread worldwide and the bacteria is highly resistive to current drug treatment.

This NDM-1 Superbug has been diagnosed in 37 people who have traveled back to the United Kingdom after receiving surgery at medical facilities in Pakistan and India. Researchers are worried because so many people travel to India or Pakistan for medical treat that this could become a worldwide health problem. Evidently, the gene sometimes alters bacteria which makes it hard to treat with current medical protocol. Scientists are recommending upping healthy hygiene practices to try to avoid getting or spreading the superbug.

My answer is a short and sweet one, and I have just been watching this in the news this morning and tonight. A really big help would be good and proper hygiene, always wash hands :

rubbing palms together
right hand over left hand rubbing in between the fingers and vice versa
under the fingernails

and another tip would be always carrying a hand sanitizer, to further prevent
the virus going to your mouth (and therefore spreading, and causing sickness to others)

basically superbug is an enzyme that is capable of jumping to different strains of bacteria making it resistance to all antibiotics, but my question is from where was this enzyme first discovered? from bacteria or any other micro organism? and how does it look?
